Details of Google Pixel 5a show up offering a familiar design

The next round of Pixel leaks have begun with details, including renders of a phone purported to be the Pixel 5a showing up online.

The leaks were shared on Voice by Onleaks aka Steve Hemmerstoffer who claims the phone is the Pixel 5a.

The phone will include a 6.2-inch OLED FHD+ display with a front-facing camera in a hole punch notch. The body shown is almost identical in design to the Pixel 4a, though with some tweaks.

For a start the body apparently measures 156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8 mm which is significantly larger than the Pixel 4a which measured 144 x 69.4 x 8.2 mm. It’s more in line with the Pixel 4a (5G) which measured 153.9 x 74 x 8.2 mm and also had a 6.24-inch display.

Whether there will be a ‘smaller’ Pixel is a bit unclear with Google’s naming conventions, so well have to wait and see.

According to the post, the Pixel 5a will include a unibody design “likely plastic made” which fits in line with materials on the Pixel ‘a’ series phones.

This phone will also have the ‘colour pop’ power button, though it looks as though it’s textured.

Notably the Pixel 5a render shows a dual camera configuration, though the exact sensors aren’t known it’s possible Google may re-use the 12.2MP dual-pixel and 16 MP ultrawide sensor combo used on the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 last year.

Google will again retain the headphone jack and the Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor is also making a return on the rear of the phone. The base of the phone shows speaker grilles and of course a USB-C port for charging.

When Google will launch the Pixel 5a is very much a big question, Google launched their first gen ‘a’ series Pixels in May at Google I/O in 2019. With COVID spreading, Google, among other tech companies, cancelled their in-person events for Google I/O last year moving the expected launch of the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 to later in the year in 2020.

With all that in mind, it’s anyone’s guess when the phone will launch, so hit me up with your thoughts.
