Google to launch affordable ‘Pixel Buds A’

Love them or hate them, Google’s Pixel Buds are a pretty great pair of Totally Wireless Stereo earbuds, but they are expensive. Google is looking to address the price, much as they did with their A-series Pixel phones, by introducing the Pixel Buds A for the budget conscious.

The Pixel Buds A rumour comes from 9to5Google based on reports from their sources – and a recent visit to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by some new Google hardware.

According to their sources the Pixel Buds A will be ‘almost visually indistinguishable from the current Pixel Buds’, though new colour options, including one with matching all white case (inside and out) and much darker forest green colour may be introduced.

The so-called Pixel Buds A will be touch enabled for both audio and phone controls, as well as for calling, and interacting with the Google Assistant.

In terms of when they’ll show, the new Pixel Buds can’t be too far off with a visit to the FCC last month yielding some tidbits about the new earphones. The new headphones will be slightly more powerful – 13.24mW/19.82mW vs 8mW/16mW on last years Pixel Buds – and have similar dimensions – 27x20x15mm vs 20.5×19.5 x18.2mm on the current gen.

The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted the usual hardware launch cycle for Google, so when we’ll see these new Pixel Buds is anyone’s guess, though tech analyst Jon Prosser has previously said we’ll see these mid-April.

We’ll soon see, but given the complaints about performance on the Pixel Buds (gen 2), these better address those issues if Google expects to win over customers.
