Google Play Points rewards program now live in Australia

Google has begun rolling out their incentive program,Google Play Points, in Australia this week in a bid to encourage you to try out new content, and spend money in the Play Store.

Although not officially announced by Google Australia, the opt-in Play Points program is showing up in the Play Store for Android phones in Australia now.

The program first launched in Japan in 2018 and lets you earn points for every dollar you spend in the Play Store on Apps, Games, Movies and Books, as well as when you download ‘highlighted’ content.

Play Points can be redeemed for Google Play Credit, or ‘special items and discounts’ in selected games, with a bonus 3 times more points for the first seven days when you join.

There are four levels in the Play Points program – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum – with each level offering more perks including weekly prizes and multipliers for every dollar you spend.

Owners of the new Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) will get bonus Play Points if they join, with the Pixel 5 getting immediate Gold status and 600 bonus points, while Pixel 4a (5G) customers will simply get 150 points.

Unlike the recently launched Apple Arcade competitor, Google Play Pass, which Google launched in Australia earlier this year there’s no ongoing cost to join or participate, you simply need to collect enough points by buying or downloading content on Google Play within a calendar year to maintain a level.

If you want to give it a whirl, you can fire up the Play Store on your Android phone and join up now.

Now, if anyone sees any promo posters for Play Pass or Play Points, I want to hear about it!
